Bodeca Design - Designed straight from the heart

ree

My first introduction to design was in the 3rd standard. We were living in Delhi then, and being surrounded by all those monuments made my heart sing. I was always fairly good at arts and crafts, and loved english and social sciences so a career in design seemed natural. By the time I was in middle school we had left the monuments of Delhi behind and moved to the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. Gone was the greenery and the human scaled building skyline, replaced with the high rises of Mumbai. What remained was my fascination with design. So when in high school, it was time to choose a career path to pursue for my undergraduate education, Architecture and by extension Design seemed like a natural progression. And thus began my everlasting love affair with architecture, the offspring of which is Bodeca Design.

Bodeca Design is an expression of my journey both as a person as well as an architect. Bodeca represents the three cities that first introduced me to design - Bombay (now Mumbai), Delhi (now Dilli), and Calcutta (now Kolkata). More importantly these places are an embodiment of my past, present, and future.

When I first began architecture school, like every other student I was starry eyed and came with a superhero mindset - I wanted to be a Pritzker Prize winner! By the time I was halfway through, reality had set in - but along with it came some clarity - what I saw myself doing in the future, and a roadmap for how I was planning on achieving it.

By my final year I was sure I wanted to pursue Urban Conservation which intersected Urban Planning and Heritage Conservation with a healthy dose of Urban Design thrown into the mix. In that regard I went on to pursue my Dual Masters at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. While there, I had the opportunity to visit so many architectural wonders that I had only read about blew my mind!

I have always been fascinated with urban challenges. I enjoy learning and discovering what makes cities tick, and function the way they do, what makes them diverse and unique and yet inherently the same. I also enjoy exploring urban and rural settlements to try and better understand the mechanisms that make them work the way they do and attempt to identify those that don’t.

Life has been kind to me and given me plenty of opportunities to pursue Urban Conservation at my dream workplace, and yet, there was always a part of me that yearned for more. It felt like a part of me was missing. And then Covid 19 happened and the world as we knew it came to a stand-still. I was in Hyderabad then, and working on an urban conservation project. When I moved back home to Mumbai post the first wave, I took a break, my first one since I started architecture school, and reflected on what I wanted to do in life. By then it was abundantly clear that for now, my life was in Mumbai, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to work in an architecture firm.

It was around this time I met my first client. And while the project remained a pipe dream, it opened my eyes to the possibility that I too could be my own boss. Design straight from my heart to best suit the client’s needs. And it was around this time that I got my first project - the house in Lower Parel. The rest as they say is history. After that there was no looking back - and here we are some 5 odd years later, as I embark on building Bodeca Design to be a better version of that fledgling dream that began during the pandemic.

This blog is just an extension of the design studio, giving insight to the thought process that goes behind each project that we take up at Bodeca Design while also sharing our opinions on trends in design amongst other things.
